Summary
Louise Brockaway Stanwood (1858-1935) graduated from Vassar College in 1880 and came to Evanston in 1883. A founding member of the Woman’s Club of Evanston, Stanwood was the second president of the club. Stanwood was elected to the District 75 school board in 1892, becoming the first Evanston woman to hold public office. This election was also the first in which Evanston women could vote. As school board member, Stanwood pushed for standardizing rules for developing courses of study and choosing textbooks. She helped organize the Illinois Congress of Mothers and served as president. This organization was a predecessor to the Parent Teacher’s Association and helped develop the idea of parent’s involvement in the schools.
