Summary
Elsie Brown Jones was a native of Evanston. She received a master’s degree in psychology from Northwestern University in 1925. She went on to study painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, specifically the Ox Bow School in Saugatuck, Michigan. She also studied under artists Francis Chapin, Edgar Rupprecht, and Allen Philbrick. Her work was exhibited at the Art Institute, the Corcoran gallery, the National Academy of Arts and the Philadelphia Academy of Arts. She also won the 1936 still life prize and the 1939 prize for portrait at the Woman’s Club of Evanston art shows. She was a member of the North Shore Art League, the Illinois Social Artists, and president of the Evanston Art Center.
