A historic statue with Evanston women’s history connections is recreated and restored to its home in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. The Evanston based Woman’s Christian Temperance Union originally gave the statue to the City of Chicago. Though the concrete fountain which served as the base of the statue remained, the bronze statue itself had been stolen years ago. Temperance fountains were commonly given by organizations like the WCTU to provide access to clean, running water, a healthy alternative to alcoholic beverages. They were also meant to mark symbolic space for this alternative in a world dominated by bars and pubs.
