Summary
Frances Shapiro Herskovitz (1897-1972) was a pioneering anthropologist and author who, along with her husband Melvin, helped establish African and African American Studies as a prominent field for scholarly research. Herskovitz immigrated to the U.S. from Russia at the age of eight. She attended the New York School for Social Research and studied at Columbia University. She came to Evanston when her husband was appointed Assistant Professor of Sociology in 1927. She worked closely with him conducting field studies and researching the lives of women in the many international locations they traveled to for study. They co-authored two books and wrote many articles that gave them an international reputation in their field.
