Girls Scout Programs

We are excited to launch our new Girl Scout Badge program. Local scout troops can visit the Evanston History Center, view the women’s history exhibit, and work on a badge related to Evanston women’s history. Announcing two special program options for groups who’d like to access Evanston women’s history in a new way. Groups can now schedule a special viewing of the women’s history exhibit, with either a brief exhibit introduction and tour, or a special program created for them. Groups can also schedule a private bus tour of Evanston’s women’s history sites. Please see our Events and Programs tab at the top of the page for more information. Women's History Bus Tour

Frances Willard House

Be sure to sign up for our Women’s History Bus Tour of Evanston on April 10. The tour will begin at 10 am at the Evanston History Center and will last about 2 hours, ending at EHC as well. Included will be sites all over the community that tell the story of Evanston’s women’s history. A special stop at the Frances Willard House is also included. The tour costs $25 and reservations are required. Call (847) 475-3410 or email khartzell@evanstonhistorycenter.org for more information or to make a reservation.

EWHP Exhibit Opening a Big Success

The new EWHP exhibit is now open for viewing at the Evanston History Center! “Lifting as We Climb:” Evanston Women and the Creation of a Community opened on Friday night March 19th to a packed house at EHC. More than 200 people joined us to celebrate Evanston’s amazing women’s history that night. We hope many more will visit in the coming months. If you missed the opening, you can see the exhibit when EHC is open for Dawes House tours — Thursday through Sunday from 1-4 pm. Guided tours and special events are also available. Just contact the us to learn more.

Thanks to everyone who made the exhibit possible — including EHC staff, interns and volunteers — Project Funders — and Project Partners. It was truly an amazing community project!

Lifting as We Climb

You might be wondering about our new heading — who the women are and where we got the title “Lifting as We Climb.” Our next few posts will tell you more about the women pictured, but first we’d like to tell you about the title.

“Lifting as We Climb” is the title of our new women’s history exhibit which will open at the Evanston History Center on March 19, 2010. Stay tuned for more on that event and the many others coming up in the next few months. The reason we chose it is that it was the motto of an important Evanston women’s organization and it perfectly describes the efforts of the many women and women’s organizations that we’ve encountered in this project. They all have this in common: while they are climbing to new levels in their own lives, they are also lifting others and the community that surrounds them.

This is especially true of the Iroquois League, from whom we are borrowing the title. The Iroquois League was organized to offer support to the many young, single African-American women who were working in Evanston. The organization was formed in 1917 and its house at 1125 Garnett Place functioned both as a boarding house and social center, and worship services and bible classes were offered as well. In 1926, Cora Watson was elected president and the League began to grow, eventually changing its name to the North Shore Community House. Watson was active in the League for the rest of her life. For a number of years, the motto of the League was “Lifting as We Climb” — it was also the motto of the National Association of Colored Women.
